Frequently Asked Questions
- What kind of photos contain GPS data?
- Photos taken with smartphones or cameras that have location services enabled. The GPS coordinates are embedded in the EXIF metadata of the JPEG, HEIC, or PNG file.
- Why don't my photos have GPS?
- Either location was disabled when the photo was taken, the camera doesn't have GPS, or the EXIF metadata was stripped (e.g., by image editing or messaging apps that compress photos).
- Are my photos uploaded to a server?
- No. EXIF parsing runs entirely in your browser using the exifr library. Your photo files never leave your device.
- How accurate is photo GPS?
- Smartphone GPS is typically accurate to 3–5 meters under open sky. Indoor or urban canyon environments can degrade accuracy to 10–50 meters.
- Can I extract GPS from a screenshot?
- No. Screenshots don't contain GPS metadata. Only original photos taken by a GPS-enabled device retain location data.
